Manual handling isn't just about lifting heavy boxes; it includes any activity requiring a person to use any part of their body to move, lift, or carry an object.
## Principles of Safe Lifting
To protect your back and joints, follow these core principles:
1. **Plan the Lift:** Know where you are going and ensure the path is clear.
2. **Stable Base:** Keep your feet shoulder-width apart.
3. **Bend your Knees:** Use your strong leg muscles rather than your back.
4. **Keep it Close:** Hold the load close to your body's center of gravity.
5. **Don't Twist:** Move your feet to turn, rather than twisting your torso.
## Risk Assessment
Before any manual task, perform a quick TILE assessment:
- **T**ask - Does it involve repetitive movements or long distances?
- **I**ndividual - Are you capable of the lift? Do you need help?
- **L**oad - Is it heavy, bulky, or unstable?
- **E**nvironment - Is the floor slippery? Is there enough light?
By integrating these habits into your daily routine, you can significantly reduce the risk of long-term musculoskeletal disorders.
