Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a lifesaving technique useful in many emergencies, including a heart attack or near drowning, in which someone's breathing or heartbeat has stopped.
## Why CPR Matters
When the heart stops, the lack of oxygenated blood can cause brain damage in only a few minutes. A person may die within eight to 10 minutes. CPR can keep oxygenated blood flowing to the brain and other vital organs until more-definitive medical treatment can restore a normal heart rhythm.
## The DRABC Action Plan
In Australia, the standard approach is the DRABC plan:
1. **D**anger - Check for danger to yourself, bystanders, and the casualty.
2. **R**esponse - Check for a response (COWS: Can you hear me? Open your eyes. What's your name? Squeeze my hand).
3. **A**irway - Check the airway is clear.
4. **B**reathing - Check for normal breathing.
5. **C**PR - Start 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths.
## Staying Certified
High-quality CPR is a skill that requires practice. At Hope Training College, we recommend refreshing your CPR skills every 12 months to ensure you are ready to act in an emergency.
